Creating a Sister Non-Profit
Did you know that our Electric City Food Cooperative, Inc (now doing business as Electric City Community Grocery) is officially incorporated as a cooperative enterprise in New York State - not as a 501c3 nonprofit, charitable organization?
We are proud to be a co-op, where we invest our resources together to create a community-owned, democratically governed grocery store. Being incorporated as a cooperative reflects our core values of equity and solidarity, beyond charity.
And, as we explored during our Annual Meeting, we know our co-op could benefit greatly through the creation of a sister nonprofit organization, incorporated as a tax-exempt 501c3 nonprofit organization.
Sisters help each other out - our cooperative enterprise would continue to serve as our business arm, and a nonprofit organization could serve other functions, like:
- Managing community programming and meetings spaces at our new location (e.g. cooking classes, workshops, and community events);
- Supporting development of our Solidarity Initiative, including development of food assistance programs, beyond just accepting SNAP and Double UP Food Bucks.
- Managing other aspects of our physical location, ensuring that our physical space meets our community’s needs.
