A full-service grocery store is coming to the corner of State Street and Erie Boulevard in Downtown Schenectady! For many years, downtown Schenectady has been considered a food desert. That will all be changed with the establishment of a community grocery store. Businesses, organizations, and individuals will all serve a role in expanding access to nourishing food.
Electric City Community Grocery has secured $6.1 million in grants from the City of Schenectady, County of Schenectady, and the State of New York. While that money will be used for store development and build-out, it is in the form of reimbursements. In other words, ECCG is paying for development costs up front and will be paid back from the grants after the fact. This creates the need to raise funds in advance to eliminate timing and cash flow issues.
In addition, we have contracted with National Cooperative Grocers (NCG), a business services cooperative for retail food co-ops providing purchasing power. They represent 158 food co-ops operating nearly 230 stores in 39 states with combined annual sales of $2.5 billion and serving over 1.3 million consumer-owners. This contract is funded through a USDA Healthy Food Financing Initiative Grant.
