Alex Mytelka

Alex Mytelka has been deeply involved with food co-ops for his entire adult life, starting as a member at his hometown co-op, Mohawk Harvest, in Gloversville. Alex went on to spend ten years as a member-owner and employee at Honest Weight in Albany, progressing from barista, to bookkeeper, to center store manager, and finally marketing manager. Today, Alex works for National Cooperative Grocers (NCG) where he supports 154 (and growing) member co-ops operating in 38 states. Alex is passionate about food access and strengthening the local food system. Outside of co-ops, Alex loves to garden, be in nature, and spend time with his almost 1-year-old daughter Willa, his wife Sarah, and their husky pup, Rue.

Why did you join the team at the Electric City Food Co-Op?
I’m deeply passionate about the positive impact that food co-ops make on the communities that they serve. The value that a co-op brings to the local community of farmers, makers, food access, and of course, food eaters, is simply unparalleled. I’ve spent a lot of time around food co-ops, but I’ve never been involved in a startup with as much potential as Electric City. I’m honored (and incredibly excited) to be part of the group of folks bringing this co-op to life.

What excites you about Schenectady?
I’m so energized by the development of Downtown Schenectady in recent years – and I know that a food co-op serving residents and visitors will really bring things to the next level. The entrepreneurial spirit and energy in the community are so exciting to be a part of. On a personal level, my wife and I met on our first day of classes at Union Graduate School (now Clarkson), and most of our first memories together are in downtown Schenectady, so the area holds a very special place in my heart.
